betty_massey_cooperGreetings Barr Street High School Tigers!

I, Betty Massey Cooper, graduated as valedictorian of the class of 1966, following in the footsteps of my brother, Samuel Crockett Massey, who was the valedictorian of the class of 1962.

I graduated from South Carolina State University where I received the Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology. Later, I received the Masters of Education Degree from Winthrop University. I did further study at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where I obtained certification in Counseling and Administration. My educational career includes: Elementary School Principal, Assistant Principal, Middle/High School Counselor and Special Education Teacher. I retired from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System in June, 2004.

I was married to the late Donnell Cooper and have lived in Charlotte, North Carolina for 43 years. I have two daughters, Saundra Hammond, who is a Rehabilitation Nurse and Jocelyn Cooper, who is a Mental Health Counselor. Both of them live in Charlotte, North Carolina. I also have two beautiful granddaughters, Roslyn Friday and Maya Hammond.

I enjoy traveling, reading, community involvement, tutoring students and volunteering at my church. I am a member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.

The education that I received at Barr Street High School gave me a strong foundation that prepared me for college and beyond. I will always be appreciative of the teachers, principals and the many friends that made my high school experience memorable and unforgettable.

We were truly a family!
